The Concept Of Sound Healing

There is no denying the power of that wonderful thing called music. It affects us deeply and even the earliest people had some form of music, with primitive drums and rough instruments. Everyone knows that music can cheer a person up, make the burden of work lighter, and brighten an atmosphere up like nothing else can. But did you know that sounds can actually heal?
Sound as an instrument of healing has been known from ancient days. But in recent times, studies have shown that music and other auditory stimuli have a remarkable influence on emotions, states of mind, physiological aspects and mental attitudes. The theory behind sound as an effective method of healing is that the common energy that binds all life is present in our bodies, and certain sound frequencies are in harmony with our own energies. So vibrations from one form of energy such as music can make changes in another form such as the life force in a human body. This phenomenon has been observed with crystal glasses, cancer cells, and water crystals.
Heal or Cure?
In this context, the difference between healing and curing should be clearly understood. Curing eliminates symptoms such as pain or infection, while healing is an innate part of life which constantly tunes energy to the right, natural frequency. Healing is based on the concept that all life energy, of every part of the universe, forms a cohesive whole. When one is in harmonious accord with the rest of the universe, one is healthy and happy. Healing results in spiritual awareness and changes our perceptions of our surroundings, and perspectives on others and ourselves. When we are healthy or being healed, our attitudes, vibrations and cellular composition gets into accord with other energies, making our minds, bodies and spirits sing the song that the rest of the universe is singing. Curing tends to deal with the bodily problems of a person, whereas the effects of healing permeate all aspects of human life – physical, mental and spiritual. Healing allows us to detach ourselves from considerations of the ego. More than alleviation of physical symptoms, healing effects a permanent change in the condition that requires healing.

Where Does Music Come In?
Now how does sound heal? We have learned that various brain centres are activated by certain pulses. Brainwaves are entrained by the process of sympathetic resonance, and we tend to go along with the strongest in our environment. Since they are made up of 70% water, human bodies are great receivers and transmitters of vibrations. What’s more, our spinal nerves pass on sensory information about vibrations to the brain stem as well as the limbic system which deals with emotions. Since all life consists of energy vibrating at different frequencies, the right frequencies can be very effective in human healing. Disequilibrium can be righted and dissonance attuned to the universal harmony. Each note is linked to a chakra, or vital point, in our bodies, and can be used to heal that area.
Healing Sounds
All kind of instruments are used in sound healing – the human voice, musical instruments such as a digiridoo or a flute, bells, electronic instruments, and so on. Have you ever seen a Tibetan Singing Bowl? These ordinary looking metal Himalayan bowls as they are also known, emit a lovely resonant note when they are rubbed with a fat wooden stick in a steady circular motion. The tone that a Tibetan Singing Bowl produces resonates with healing energy and harmonizes soothingly with other energies.

These healing instruments are effective even when the patient hears the sound they make through air conduction, but it has been observed that when Tibetan Singing Bowls are placed on the body and sounded, healing is accelerated, because the sound energy is directly acting on muscles, etc. These bowls vibrate at a perfect frequency – called “Aum” or “Om”, and generate overtones that blend in wonderful harmony. Notes lose their individual identity in this perfect blend. This sound leads to wellness by tuning our systems of energy on to the same perfect frequency. Calming, energizing vibrations are passed through our bodies, drawing us into the flow of energy shared by the whole universe. Our nervous systems feel this beneficent influence and a Theta brainwave state – a state that generates inspiration, intuition, creativity, spiritual energy and freedom from limitations – is activated. Both hemispheres of the brain move into equilibrium and the parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated, improving immunity, bringing down stress levels and harmonizing cardiac and respiratory systems.
Tuning forks are also useful in sound healing. They bring auric fields and energy levels into equilibrium, and are also effective in balancing the left and right sides of the brain. They also influence the cerebral spinal fluid. Tuning forks have shown remarkable instances of healing such as in spinal injuries, dislocations, and so on. The science of using tuning forks as a method of healing is called acutronics.

Quartz crystal bowls have been found to be efficacious in healing. Used in conjunction with tuning forks (easily available anywhere), these bowls enhance healing beautifully. The forks amplify the effect of the bowls.
An important sound used in this type of healing is “Aum” or “Om”. Its rough meaning is “I am that I am” and this powerful word’s soaring frequency of vibration heightens consciousness and makes it easier to blend one’s own energies with the universal energy.
What Makes Sound Healing Effective?
It is believed that in addition to the techniques and styles of sound healing used, the intent behind the healing is very important. Concentration and a strong desire to heal the patient definitely improve the effectiveness of sound healing.
The relationship between the notes used in healing is also important. Timing, the interval between tones and harmony are all highly relevant. Sound healing is becoming more popular and its efficacy widely recognized. So the next time you have a backache or a cold, try sound healing and see just how well it works for you.
