How To Improve Your Company's Image

Many businesses and governmental entities today are more concerned with working green than ever before. Working green can be helpful in promoting a positive image of your company to society. Working green also has an impact on the health and abilities of the employees of the business. If you are a business owner, you have a responsibility to your employees, and to the citizens of your area to move in the direction of a green workplace.

Cost

In many instances, the cost of working green is higher in the present, but may have positive long term effects as the initial capital outlay requirements are paid off. Examples would be purchasing products, equipment or furnishings that have a longer lifespan so that the issues of trash are not so pressing. In some instances, the products are more expensive, but they have fewer harmful effects on the environment so they are less costly overall. Certainly, choosing products that use less energy to operate or maintain is an environmentally green way to proceed. The reduction in cost of energy is something that will become more and more difficult to maintain as the cost of energy continues to increase.

Health

When you are conscious of green methods and the environment in the work place, your employees will be happier and this leads to better health, both directly and indirectly. With no harmful products being released into the air and water used by your employees, they will have a higher level of health. There will be fewer digestive problems and fewer respiratory problems than are present under today's products mix. Fewer sick days from the effects of environmental issues can only benefit businesses.

Recycle

Your employees should be encouraged to recycle items such as paper, newsprint and beverage containers on a regular basis. Make recycling easy. Recycling bins or barrels should be labeled and emphasized by edict and by example as well. Related to recycling is the habit of using up products like paper rather than throwing them away. For example, when making copies or using draft copies of a report, use both sides of the paper. Using double-sided copying whenever possible can save a tremendous amount of office paper supplies.

Build Green

Buildings that are being constructed today for both business and home use are much more energy efficient than was possible in the past. Of course, alternative and renewable energy sources are commonplace for heating and cooling company buildings, but the buildings themselves are being designed and constructed in such a way as to leave a very small environmental footprint upon the earth. Technological advances in construction materials, the orientation of the buildings, and the way the materials are being put together are all ways in which employers and employees alike can put forth a more positive green picture to competitors and to the general public.

Be Energy Conscious

When you are energy conscious in front of employees, they soon learn that you believe in what you say. Initiate programs and habits that demonstrate that you are making positive changes, and your employees will soon make these habits their own. Recycle and reuse paper products where appropriate. A company can insist on energy conscious supplies in every aspect of the organization, a sure way to win the respect and even admiration of the company. Employees are proud to be a part of something that they believe in.

Use Green Products

Not only should employees be encouraged to use up products, but they must also be retrained in order to ensure that green products are purchased and used wherever possible. The company probably won't obsess in most instances about determining whether a particular product is green or not, but a dedicated purchasing agent will be able to do much to ensure that the products are those that proudly carry the "green" label. Companies that reduce energy consumption and that use green products are the most respected businesses in the community.

Purchase Energy-saving Appliances and Equipment

More equipment and appliance choices today are towing the line for improving energy efficiency. Not only are such appliances popular in spite of increased cost outlays in some instances, but they are being selected by a growing and educated group of consumers for the benefits in the cost of energy products. Examples are 'Energy Star' equipment and appliances such as refrigerators, dryers, and even computers and printing equipment. Appliances that run on a lower volume of energy not only save money, but can be a positive selling point for the citizens of the community in general.

Use Fleet Fuel Optimization Methods

Not all businesses and corporations offer a corporate interest in the fuel optimization level of the company fleet. Even if there is only one to two vehicles involved in the operation, it is wise review the insurance policy periodically. In other instances, the green corporation may not be the best option for the type of business planned on site. The way to view new concepts on fleet energy consumption is to make an effort to purchase vehicles that are certified to have the best possible efficiency. Using vehicles with lower emissions ratings will help to protect the environment as well.

Alternative Energy Sources

Not only can employees and businesses improve the use of products that are more energy efficient, but alternative energy sources in the business or corporation will help to reduce the level of dependence upon the electrical grid which may rely partially or solely upon energy produced by fossil fuels. Installation of solar panels on the roof of the building, reliance upon windmills or tidal mills is a cost-saving mechanism for the business as well as one which is environmentally friendly.
